Tiger again and a John Daly perspective
You just can’t say enough about Tiger. Here is my take away from his victory on Sunday at the Arnold Palmer Bay Hill Invitational that maybe you can relate to your own game. He has that ability to tune out his surroundings in pressure situations. In other words he can create a tunnel vision and take ego completely out of the mix. We as mere mortals allow the thought of what people may think of our performance enter our minds; which in turn affects how we react under pressure. I think “choking” is the word most of us use. You have to believe in your pre-shot routine and use that nervous energy to your advantage if you want to win. This is what makes the greats.
Now about John Daly. I do not know John real well, but we have meet and spoken a few times at various functions and have some common friends. Sure he has made bad judgments at times, but haven’t we all. Believe me he is a good and generous person. As a matter of fact, I had lunch with his brother and the greens keeper of his home town golf course he purchased a few years ago (The Lion’s Den) a couple of weeks before I left for Oklahoma. I can say they conveyed that John was doing well and was sincere about making this a productive year.
I am not in the habit of talking bad about others but the way Butch Harmon handled the “firing” of John was wrong, professionally and morally. That should have been a private conversation between two men, whatever the issues were. To me how Butch Harmon treated the situation was in his own interest. If he was a true friend he would have not blasted John at least without talking to him. In my opinion, John showed nothing but class once the story broke. If you really paid attention and think about it, it is obvious who disrespected whom. John is a man, vices and all, and he respects his fellow man. John lives his life like an open book and unfortunately we have these talking heads that feel that their purpose is be the first to judge and most of the time without the full story. Believe me he does more good for others (and the tour) than you will ever hear about. There, that’s my take…..just wanted to get that off my chest.

I am a John Daly fan myself. I met him and his brother during the British Open at Muirfield in 92. We were at a very crowded pub on the Friday night of the 2nd round in N. Berwick when Freddies first wife Debra did a striptease on top of a table. Freddie didn’t make the cut and didn’t feel like partying but Debra sure did. She was down to bra and skirt when a few pro’s who were there hustled her out. I think John D was one who helped along with Craig Stadler and Russ Cochran. She was going for broke!
