The Mental Golf Game

If you got to watch the Bob Hope Classic this past weekend, it should have made you stop and think how can a wily veteran (Justin Leonard) lose to a rookie (D.J. Trahan) coming down the stretch, especially when they were in the same group eye to eye. Just goes to show you how fragile the golf swing is. Now there is a reason why Justin Leonard (who was leading going into the final round) sliced it into the water on 18. If you can give me the right answer, I’ll send you my ebook, The Effortless Power Golf Swing, at no charge. I will give you a hint: Looking up, coming over the top or not staying behind it are not the correct answers. they don’t mean anything unless you know why these things happen. They are just cliches that people use to describe what they think they see happening in the swing. There is a reason for everything. Good Luck!

Leonard let his mind leave the present moment to think about how great it would be to win another pga event - all I have to do is keep the ball out of that lake ;)

This one’s easy! …..because that’s where he THOUGHT it was going to go!

Thanks for the comments Artful Golfer and Paula! I perused your blog Artful, VERY well done and great layout. :)

Both of those are good answers, but not the one I am looking for. If I lead you astray with the title of the post I apologize. Yes, bad thoughts or bad swing thoughts are not a good thing. Actually, pros do not think about where not to hit it like amateurs do.

I want to know what in his physical swing, caused him to hit it in the lake. I will make another post about this and a new idea that came up from reading your comments. Thanks again for taking the time!

Don’t know if you will pick this up but I would take a stab and say that he was unable to deal with the tension in his swing; failing to release the tension on the backswing and/or reintroducing tension on the downswing.

Leonard is an excellent player, however, he doesn’t utilise the swing mechanics/power sources of VJ, Couples, Els, Woods et al. Who all swing with an Effortless Power Golf Swing!
