US Open: A Classic

Sorry I haven’t made a post in awhile. Been busy with teaching. What can you say about Tiger. Ought to make a lot of these over priced athletes take notice what it takes to be a winner. No matter what your feelings about Tiger, you have to respect his guts. It was also fun to see Rocco Mediate do well. For years one of the most popular players on tour by fans and his peers. Now those that don’t regularly follow golf know about him. He seems like a really nice person and if he hadn’t had the injuries he has been plagued with, he could of probably been a major player. Injuries in golf come from tension. When you are changing direction in the swing from front to back you better stay relaxed or you can really hurt yourself.

I have some drills in my ebook (coming soon, we have a host we are happy with now) that will allow you to feel when you are fighting your body with your arms. The arms have to stay relaxed throughout the swing to keep from injuring yourself. Good luck and good golfing.

Survived the Holiday and John Daly!

Howdy everyone! Yes, I am still alive. Been very busy with work here and keeping up with our crazy weather. For Memorial Day weekend we put on a scramble which was fun for all.

We changed hosts for this blog, and my online partner was occupied with some family health issues. That is why I am just now getting the post below out.

I had a great time at John Daly’s charity golf tournament benefiting the Boy Scouts.  They had a great turnout and it was definitely for a good cause. I visited with John briefly. As you can imagine he does draw a crowd. Plus being his home town tournament he was quite in demand. His golf course is in a beautiful setting looking across to Mt. Nebo and overlooking Lake Dardenelle.  We finished 2nd in our flight due to the great playing of my good friend Donnie Owens. If you ever wanted to emulate a swing, his is as good as anyones.  He is the epitome of what I teach.  Shame I did not have Robert there videoing him.

After the past 2 weeks finally got a little time to breath and relax! :) This morning I was hitting balls and worked only on my swing trigger.  It’s amazing how good your timing becomes when your trigger is working.
Tempo of the take away.  I can’t emphasize how important this is to make a good swing.  Hope everyone had a good memorial day and weekend.  To be honest, I couldn’t help but thinking of my friend Mike Thomas who was killed in Vietnam.  He was a good guy.  Bittersweet holiday when you realize what the day is really supposed to be about.

Sergio closes the deal

First off, I apologize no posts in awhile. I had one of my students from Canada fly down here for some instruction. We had some good rounds and got some things accomplished.

Congratulations to Sergio Garcia. He finally got the monkey off his back. Obviously, the press can be cruel to a point that is all you can think about. The constant questioning of when are you going to be able to win has to affect the psyche. Folks tend to forget, just because these guys are on tour does not mean they are not human. Anyway, the tournament had the duel of two opposites. The striker of the ball and the short game player. Both were more than average this week. It should show the average golfer you can win either way. So it’s just as important to practice short game as well as the long game. For example: the other day the driving range was closed due to the large amount of rain we had. By the way, people are not pleasant when they don’t get their way! So, when they were told the range was closed, their response was kind of nasty. Then to each one i said the short game area was still open and they could work on their chipping and putting. To a man each one responded that was something they should probably do. duh! let me put it this way, it’s hard to knock a driver in the hole. If Sergio had the short game Paul Goydos has, he would have won going away and would probably give Tiger a run for his money.
Charter (my dog) is having fun chasing the geese off the golf course. I’m going to play in John Daly’s charity tournament this weekend. It is held at the course he bought in his home town and benefits Big Brothers. I hope to have some breaking news come Sunday.

The Byron Nelson Classic: course was the winner

I played this weekend in a small pro-am tourney that I helped run. I do NOT recommend playing one you are helping to run! I played just horrible.  I hadn’t practiced and never stayed with my pre shot routine.  I don’t care how good you are or think you are, you have to practice.  It (a bad round/tournament) can happen to anybody.  So, don’t get discouraged when you don’t have a good round, it can and does happen;  even to an old pro like me. ;)  The old adage ‘practice makes perfect’ is obviously true. So before you get down on yourself make sure you have devoted the time.  If it doesn’t work then, find someone you can trust and see if they can’t put you back in timing.

The EDS Byron Nelson Classic had a great finish. Adam Scott finally closed the deal and got that monkey off his back. It was also good to see Ryan Moore play so well and especially on a Sunday. He has one of the best amateur records in the modern US era, and I figured he would break out if he could ever stay healthy.

However, the real winner was D.A. Weibring (nothing agaisnt Mr. Scott). The Nelson at the TPC Four Seasons in Las Colinas has been affected by where it is on the schedule and it good to see a course worthy of it’s name sake. Last year the greens were the worst on tour (thanks to bad weather) and I personally like playing on one course instead of two. Mr. Weibring obviously did an excellent job with the “remodel” and in only a years time. It looked fantastic on TV and the scores bear out the increased difficulty. In past years double digits under par were the norm. Byron Nelson will always be at the top of the list of all time greats and what he did in 1945 (winning 18 times in one year) is to this day one of the greatest achievements in sport in my mind. Thus, I was happy to see the hard work DA Weibring put in and the money spent by the TPC at Las Colinas. I played it a LONG time ago and look forward to seeing this new course in person.
