Survived the Holiday and John Daly!

Howdy everyone! Yes, I am still alive. Been very busy with work here and keeping up with our crazy weather. For Memorial Day weekend we put on a scramble which was fun for all.

We changed hosts for this blog, and my online partner was occupied with some family health issues. That is why I am just now getting the post below out.

I had a great time at John Daly’s charity golf tournament benefiting the Boy Scouts.  They had a great turnout and it was definitely for a good cause. I visited with John briefly. As you can imagine he does draw a crowd. Plus being his home town tournament he was quite in demand. His golf course is in a beautiful setting looking across to Mt. Nebo and overlooking Lake Dardenelle.  We finished 2nd in our flight due to the great playing of my good friend Donnie Owens. If you ever wanted to emulate a swing, his is as good as anyones.  He is the epitome of what I teach.  Shame I did not have Robert there videoing him.

After the past 2 weeks finally got a little time to breath and relax! :) This morning I was hitting balls and worked only on my swing trigger.  It’s amazing how good your timing becomes when your trigger is working.
Tempo of the take away.  I can’t emphasize how important this is to make a good swing.  Hope everyone had a good memorial day and weekend.  To be honest, I couldn’t help but thinking of my friend Mike Thomas who was killed in Vietnam.  He was a good guy.  Bittersweet holiday when you realize what the day is really supposed to be about.

High Praise for Gravity Golf

I received an email weeks ago from one of my old students who has become a good friend. We stay in touch and she was informing me of all the new upgrades that have occurred at Mission Hills (where I used to teach). Anyway, she included some info of a conversation she had with Butch Harmon’s brother that I thought was interesting. Here is the excerpt of what I feel is a pretty good endorsement of what I teach:

“Best compliment you can have.

I saw Billy Harmon yesterday.

He said to me, “I was thinking about you the other day and that you learned gravity golf and hit it like a ton. That is the new way of learning now!”

Billy’s teaching at Toscana in the desert now.
He was giving a clinic at Mission Hills yesterday. “

This student/friend that sent the letter is Kathleen Sullivan.  Some of you may remember her as one of the first women sportscasters for ABC.

Also,  a few weeks ago, my brother David  and Lee Trevino put on a clinic in the Atlanta area.  Yes, that Lee Trevino. David worked with Mr. Trevino in the later part of his career and he has  praised  the methodology of Gravity Golf for years. I don’t remember the exact quote, but he credited David with extending the longevity of his career and they have been friends since David’s tour days.

I’m in the middle of running a tournament this week and when it is over we hope to get my instructional guide finalized. It will be a concise, easy to understand basics on the golf swing the above endorse.

In the mean time watch Lorena Ochoa swing! What a run she is on. Of course she is taking this week off, but seriously watch her play when you can. She is the epitome of what I teach and preach. She is not that big of a person and  is leading the LPGA in driving distance right at 300 yards I believe.

Lorena Ochoa does it effortlessly

Sorry I haven’t written anything in awhile. Getting adjusted to my new job and planning tournaments, etc. The weather has not cooperated much in this part of the world in early Spring. I made a quick trip back to Hot Springs and Conway to pick up “Charter” (my dog) a few weeks ago. If you are an animal lover, you know I was anxious to get him moved with me. Getting him settled to his new environs is a whole other story! I have also signed a contract to play Wilson irons. They look pretty good and I had been on their staff in the past years. Good company, but have been under the radar as of late.

How about Lorena Ochoa? I can’t say enough, but she is the epitome of what I teach. It is amazing how much the women’s tour has evolved in the past eight years. I think it’s sad though, that nine out of the top ten ranked woman in the world are not from the states. (nothing against other nationalities, just an observation of the US losing ground). Mr. Hogan has had such an influence on the PGA teachers, it’s left us behind. Enough said. :)
Hope you have a great Masters weekend. My favorite tourney.

Tiger again and a John Daly perspective

You just can’t say enough about Tiger. Here is my take away from his victory on Sunday at the Arnold Palmer Bay Hill Invitational that maybe you can relate to your own game. He has that ability to tune out his surroundings in pressure situations. In other words he can create a tunnel vision and take ego completely out of the mix. We as mere mortals allow the thought of what people may think of our performance enter our minds; which in turn affects how we react under pressure. I think “choking” is the word most of us use. You have to believe in your pre-shot routine and use that nervous energy to your advantage if you want to win. This is what makes the greats.

Now about John Daly. I do not know John real well, but we have meet and spoken a few times at various functions and have some common friends. Sure he has made bad judgments at times, but haven’t we all. Believe me he is a good and generous person. As a matter of fact, I had lunch with his brother and the greens keeper of his home town golf course he purchased a few years ago (The Lion’s Den) a couple of weeks before I left for Oklahoma. I can say they conveyed that John was doing well and was sincere about making this a productive year.

I am not in the habit of talking bad about others but the way Butch Harmon handled the “firing” of John was wrong, professionally and morally. That should have been a private conversation between two men, whatever the issues were. To me how Butch Harmon treated the situation was in his own interest. If he was a true friend he would have not blasted John at least without talking to him. In my opinion, John showed nothing but class once the story broke. If you really paid attention and think about it, it is obvious who disrespected whom. John is a man, vices and all, and he respects his fellow man. John lives his life like an open book and unfortunately we have these talking heads that feel that their purpose is be the first to judge and most of the time without the full story. Believe me he does more good for others (and the tour) than you will ever hear about. There, that’s my take…..just wanted to get that off my chest.

Back from Palm Springs, ready for Spring!

Arrived in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and started my new job as golf pro on Friday. The golf course looks great, but was under a sheet of ice. :o I had a good four days in Palm Springs, CA. I worked with my student on the tempo of his takeaway on the golf course and it made all the difference. How about Tiger’s comeback against J.B. Holmes. Pretty determined fellow. Tiger still hits his driver crooked. If you think you know why, let me know and if you answer correctly, I’ll send you my e-book, The Effortless Power Golf Swing, for free. We hope to be finished within the next two weeks.

Golf Short Game Answer & Winner

A few posts ago, I offered up a free copy of my coming ebook The Effortless Power Golf Swing. The question was, ‘how do you control distance in the short game’. Well, Joe answered correctly! It seems he has either meet my brother David and/or read his book! (Gravity Golf, by David Lee). The old post and Joe’s answer (as a comment) are here: Free Golf Lessons and eGuide.

Distance is determined by the “intensity” of the backswing. David uses the term “heave” for the initiation of this beginning movement of the golf swing. The amount of force you exert on the backswing determines the speed and length of the swing. A common mistake is to think about the length of your backswing and/or the follow through on shorter shots. What you need to learn is the speed of the backswing.

Once we get my current ebook finished, which will cover the fundamentals and principles needed…….a foundation if you will, I plan to write a short game guide with videos of drills. In my opinion a lot of people make this way more complicated then it has to be. You can learn proper technique and more importantly what to practice and HOW to practice.

I am in Palm Springs, CA now (actually LaQuinta) as a student wanted a weekend of golf and instruction before I start my new job in OK. I saw and meet Doug Sanders today in fact! Will relay that and any other stories from ‘the desert’ when I get back next week. We had some technical difficulties, in regards to finalizing the ebook that look like they are ironed out and will get that finished ASAP. Joe we will email your copy when completed. Thanks for visiting and commenting.

The Effortless Power Golf Swing….

is coming soon! I was hoping this would have been available by now, yet Murphy’s Law has given us a few challenges. My host for this blog has been upgrading and moving and I really did not want to have a sales page for a few weeks and then have to move back. Also, a dear friend of mine passed away and I went to his funeral. During all this, I have been in negotiation for a new job which was just concluded yesterday. I will be the golf pro at Adams Municipal Golf Course, in Bartlesville Oklahoma starting the first of the month. So anyone in OK, or traveling through there this summer look me up!

This weekend I plan to add some audio and maybe some video to get the e-book, The Effortless Power Golf Swing completed. I see no one took me up on my offer in my last post!? :( LOL  We have some plans to do some fun contests for those that care to participate. The rewards will be some gratis ebooks and maybe some lessons. We have always planned to offer video and phone lessons, and are investigating the most efficient way to do that.  That will be later in the year as well as downloadable videos of the key drills I use with my students. However, the first priority is to finish up the tech stuff for my basic golf instruction e-guide. My host is hoping we should be fully operational by next week. I definately want to get this up before my move in  3 weeks!

Free Golf Lessons and eGuide!?

My last post was kind of spur of the moment. I had just watched Justin Leonard lose a tournament that was his to win…….and had the idea to start some discussion on this blog. If you have not visited here before I am in the midst of finalizing an e-guide (aka e-book) on the basics of the golf swing. At least my philosophy of it.

So I thought about offering a free copy to who could answer the question I asked in last week’s post. Again it was a bit spur of the moment. Frankly, it was not well thought out. If you did not actually watch the coverage (the 18th tee shot at the Bob Hope Classic by Justin Leonard) you would have no idea what I was talking about as I could not supply a video of the actual shot in question!

Therefore, I think it would be fun, and hopefully instructional to cover various aspects of the golf game. I would like to generate some discussion, give some free tips and lessons and hopefully award some free copies of my upcoming golf swing instructional e-guide, The Effortless Power Golf Swing.

How about Tiger.  The greatest?  I would have to say yes.  (and I’m a big Jack Nicklaus fan) but what makes him the best is he has all the shots.  His short game is as good as anyone that has ever played the game.  Most golfers get way too caught up in how far they hit the ball, instead of trying to get it in the hole. Take a lesson from Tiger this week, work on the short game.  If you spent 70% of your practice time on chipping and putting,  I would bet that most of you could drop your handicaps by 2 to 5 shots easily.  My question this week for one of my ebooks if answered correctly is “how do you control distance in the short game.”  Hint: how far you take the club back is not the answer.   Good luck!
